Toulouse, the capital of the Midi-Pyrénées region and the fourth largest city in France. The city lies on the River Garonne and is also the starting place of the Canal du Midi. This channel of 250 km length flows into the Mediterranean at Sète.
The city was founded about 200 years ago. A small group of Celts settled at the Garonne River. During the Roman Empire, the Romans founded a settlement here. This city grew rapidly and the Romans built high walls around the settlement. However, this could not prevent the settlement was sacked several times by barbarian tribes.
In the Middle Ages, the settlement had grown into a city, and was named the capital of the County of Toulouse.
